Quick Tips for Preserving Antique & Vintage Cottons and Linen Fabrics

TRUE VINTAGE & Antique fabric items typically find some discolorations, smudges, broken stitches, loose threads, holes, fabric pulls/snags, unrolled hems, thinning fabric & storage fold or iron creasing.

Here are some general preservation tips I hope you will find useful in extending the life of your collection or family heirloom.

HANDLING & STORAGE ~ Handle with clean hands & with care. Be careful not to pull or tug on the fabric items so not to mis-shape or accidentally break a sewing stitch.

Wrap them in archival, acid-free tissue paper when storing them. This reduces them from yellowing with age. Large lots can be stored with a breathable all cotton pillow case or sleeve.

Refold them every year so to reduce fabric stress within the folds.

Display or store away or display from direct sunlight so not to fade the color or deteriorate the fabric threads.

REPAIR ~ Revert to the materials of the time. Repair with vintage threads. Wash with organic or enzyme based solvents.

CLEANING STAIN REMOVAL ~ There are many methods available for cleaning the fabrics. Cleaning is a time-consuming project – so set 1/2 a day aside.

These are only tips, not a step by step cleaning guide.

Any & all cleaning solutions must be thoroughly rinsed out of the fabrics since these residues can leave chemical footprints and deteriorate the fabrics over time. Some stains will not be removable – this is the nature of this collectible.

” If your linens are mostly clean but still have that one set-in spot, here’s a simple solution. Squeeze the juice of two lemons into a dish. Place the stained part of your fabric on top of a clean, dry towel; spoon the juice onto the spot; cover with one teaspoon of salt, and gently rub in. Let sit a half hour, then rinse with white vinegar, followed by a through rinse of warm water. ” –GH [ed]

If machine washing, wash your items inside of lingerie bag. Gently cycle only. Hand washing? Do not wring out or stretch fabric when wet.

“Any time you soak vintage fabrics, the fibers become even more fragile. So try this safe trick for drying: Lay out a colorfast bath or beach towel. Place your smaller item atop the towel, or fold a large tablecloth so it matches the size of the towel it’s on. Roll linen and towel together, pressing until the towel is soaked; repeat if linen is still wet. Then, to air-dry, lay item flat or drape, folding if necessary, over a drying rack (not a clothesline or a shower rod, which can stretch linens).” – GH

In our estimation, the non-bleach stain removal methods are the most reliable. ANY type of fabric softener, bleaching agent, including the oxygenated bleaches should never touch the fabric.

We use the simple products produced when the item was originally produced. I.e. distilled water soak in a glass bowl , white vinegar wash. Some dealers & collectors have used Restoration Hypoallergenic Powder for deep cleaning with successful results.

PHILOSOPHICAL NOTE: Unremovable stain? Use your linens – stained or not. Don’t hide them away. Enjoy them in your life and smile at the long gone or new memories the stain holds. Seek professional (Fabricare Institute) advice.

I hope these few tips help you preserve your collection.
